"Phantasm is a delightful, old-fashioned word for illusory experience. But many argue that our entire experience of “reality” is a phantasm of sorts, since it cannot be experienced objectively, but only through the highly idiosyncratic lens of self (itself somewhat mystical and a conglomerate of previously acquired illusory experiences.)

We live with illusion, dance with illusion, all our lives. Even the notion of illusion is an illusion, because surely every lived experience is an experience, however it comes by.

Who are we to hierarchy it? Tears cried in a cinema are no less real than tears cried at a funeral. Contrary to popular belief, art is no more illusory than life itself.

In fact, art might be more real than “reality” because when we look at an artwork we know we’re looking at something illusory and so for once we know we are seeing something for what it is!

It is true of course that a painting and your living-room wall are identically real in both being tangible, painted surfaces, but where the wall is like drab suburban real-estate, the painting is a patch of prime sea-side real-estate with a physical value (per square inch) far exceeding that of the wall, and an experiential value far exceeding that again, because a painting performs an extraordinary trick of alchemy: the metamorphosis of surface into both mirror and window, opening onto a place altogether distant from the wall on which it hangs… and if you’re very lucky it opens onto a view profound - some key part of a glimpsed truth, that you know you must never forget."
